SCRIBBLERS HOUSE LLC is a New York City-based literary agency that represents authors and their book projects. This site contains basic information about the agency and guidelines for prospective authors to query the agency.

Represents: Mostly nonfiction by prominent authorities in their fields of expertise. Only considers novels classified as literary fiction by writers who have previously published with a bona fide book publisher or have published short fiction with notable journals and magazines.

Considers these nonfiction areas: health, medical, diet, nutrition, the brain, psychology, self-help, how-to, business, personal finance, memoirs, biography, history, politics, writing books, language, relationships, sex, pop culture, spirituality, gender issues, and parenting.

How to contact: Query by email and put “nonfiction query” or “fiction query” in the subject line followed by the title of your project (send to our submissions email). Do not send attachments or downloadable materials of any kind with query. We will request more materials if we are interested. Usually respond in 2 weeks to 2 months to email queries if we are interested (if we are not interested, we will not respond due to the overwhelming amount of queries we receive). We are only accepting email queries at the present time.

Query Letter Tips: Presentation means a lot--a well-written query letter with a brief author bio and your credentials is important. Please don't be slapdash; put time and thought into your query letter. For query letter models, go to the bookstore or go online and look at the cover copy and flap copy on other books in your general area of interest. Emulate what’s best. Have an idea of other high-profile books that will be perceived as being in the same vein as yours. Know what’s fresh or “hooky” about your project and articulate it in as few words as possible.

Agent bios--
Stedman Mays received his M.A. in English literature from the University of Virginia. He has taught composition and literature in the English department of Rutgers University and at Gotham Writers’ Workshop. He started selling books to publishers in 1993. He was working at Clausen Associates with agents Connie Clausen and Mary Tahan at the time of Connie Clausen’s death in 1997. Stedman Mays and Mary Tahan then took over the agency and formed Clausen, Mays & Tahan. In 2003, Stedman Mays independently founded SCRIBBLERS HOUSE LLC Literary Agency for all new projects going forward, while continuing to represent the backlist at Clausen, Mays & Tahan with Mary Tahan. Garrett Gambino is Stedman Mays’s associate at SCRIBBLERS HOUSE LLC Literary Agency.
